Summary: Cassie Louise Lighfoot is an eight year old in 1939 and she has a dream: to be free to go wherever she wants for the rest of her life. One night on the top of the rooftop “Tar Beach” which is her home rooftop in Harlem, her dreams come true. She flies all over the city and she claims buildings of her own so her father will not have to worry about not being able to join any clubs. Anyone can fly “all you need is somewhere to go you can’t get to any other way. Next thing you know you’re flying among the stars”.
